Doar Returns to Wild West Shootout Victory Lane After Seven Year Absence

By Ryan Neuharth

Tucson, Ariz (January 9, 2011) - It had been so long since New Richmond, WI driver Pat Doar sat in Victory Lane at the Wild West Shootout that the event technically didn't even exist. USA Raceway's mid-winter mini-series began in 2001 at Central Arizona Raceway in Casa Grande, and was known then as the Early Thaw. The 2003 edition saw Doar score two-wins and the series point's championship, but the well had run dry until this sunny Tucson afternoon.

After a less than stellar performance in the series opener, it appeared that Terry Phillips would not be denied in his quest too add to his status as the series all-time wins leader. Having blasted from his fifth starting spot to take the lead on lap two, the driver known as "TP" began to motor away as fierce battles erupted throughout the running order.

Behind the top three Phillips' teammate and opening night runner-up Jeremy Payne lead a group of contenders that included Clay Daly, Billy Moyer, Jr, Jimmy Mars and Bub McCool. That quintuplet seemingly changed positions with each flick of the steering wheel, only to have their fun interrupted by cautions for Brad Looney on lap seven and Ronnie Lee Hollingsworth on lap twelve.

Running third during the races middle stages, Doar slotted behind race long leader Phillips and hometown favorite and USA Raceway Modified Champion RC Whitwell. With the top three blasting around the top-side of the immaculately prepared speedplant, Doar took advantage of lapped traffic to maneuver past Whitwell and quickly took the fight to Phillips. It was short lived as Phillips shoved the nose off of turn two, making hard contact with the backstretch concrete and handing the lead to Doar.

In the scramble Payne edge by Whitwell for the runner-up spot with Moyer, Jr. up from ninth on lap fifteen to run fourth when the yellow would appear for top five runner Daly on lap twenty-two. Just like 24-hours earlier, a late race restart would tell a dramatic tail, but unlike night number one, Doar would have to survive not one, but three restarts in the races final seven laps.

The first of which provided the most drama as Doar jumped the cushion in turn one allowing Whitwell to throw the slide job to momentary grab the point in turn two. Down low, Payne pulled even with Whitwell as Doar threaded the needle making it a three wide charge towards turn three. Driving in deeper than his counterparts, Doar eclipsed Payne before sliding in front of Whitwell to regain the lead he lost half a lap earlier.

"I didn't know where he was, I just drove it in there and it stuck," Doar said from Element 7 Victory Lane. "He was out of sight and I hope it was clean."

Just as things appeared settled out front, all eyes shifted to hard charging Billy Moyer. Having started twenty-first, the Hall of Fame driver cracked the top ten on lap twenty and ran seventh as the yellow appeared for David Breazeale on lap twenty-seven. While this restart was far less dramatic for Doar, for the second night in a row Payne and McCool found themselves occupying the same real estate, this time Payne ended up facing the wrong direction in turn one. The scuffle resulted in the races final restart, and again Doar didn't bobble, slipping away from Whitwell and McCool as a pair of Moyer's contested third. The elder Moyer would take the position from his son completing an impressive run in which he gained seventeen positions. Doar ran the last three circuits unmolested for this third career Wild West Shootout win.

After thanking his crew and sponsors from the winner circle, Doar was sure not to forget the most important person of them all. "My wife just got here today and I guess she's good luck," said Doar.

Moyer Jr. Scores Opening Night Wild West Shootout Win

Wild West Day Two on Sunday

Ryan Neuharth Tucson, Ariz (January 8, 2011) Capitalizing on momentum from his first appearance at USA Raceway's Wild West Shootout in 2010, Billy Moyer, Jr. used his patented line around the 3/8ths mile desert oval to steal the lead from Jeremy Payne on a late race restart and take his first career Wild West Shootout win. "It's awesome to win out west like this, especially with all the Victory Circle people and Henderson Motorsports people here" Moyer, Jr. said from victory lane.

Payne would hold a comfortable lead for 20 of the main events 30-laps as Moyer Jr., Frank Heckenast, Jr., Brad Looney, Bub McCool, Ronnie Lee Hollingsworth and Jimmy Mars all diced for position. McCool and Moyer Jr. would race side by side for several early laps while Mars and Hollingsworth made it two row of two from fourth on back. Hollingsworth was making the most noise early jumping from his eleventh starting spot to run seventh on lap five and fourth two circuits later.

The early race storm was tempered when Dick Barton brought out the races first caution on lap 12, sapping Hollingsworth momentum and trapping the Northport, AL driver on the outside line during the restart. "Right Foot" Ronnie dropped back to eighth while Looney was also stumbling, losing power temporarily and falling to the tail before he could get back up to race pace.

Looney's power-failure bunched several drivers behind his slowing Victory Circle machine, leaving Heckenast, Jr. with no place to go as Moyer, Jr, Mars and McCool would all advance two places closer to the front. Heckenast's misfortune turned into Moyer, Jr's golden opportunity as he pulled to the outside of Payne on lap seventeen just as Rob Mayea would pull-up in turn one with a flat right rear, bringing out the yellow and setting the stage for a dramatic late race pass for the win.

With Payne out front for the Delaware restart, Moyer, Jr. lined-up on the inside of row two. When Payne slide across the racetrack in turn one on the restart, it opened the door for Moyer Jr. to grab the top spot and set sail towards the checkered. "I went to the top a little too early" Moyer, Jr. said after the win. "That last restart fell just right, we lined up on the bottom and when (Payne) went high to try and block we drove right past." Quickly extend his lead to a full straightway, Moyer, Jr. left Payne to fend off a hard charging Mars, McCool and a rebounding Hollingsworth.

And what was maybe a hint at things to come, and unlike 2010, the second generation driver will happily be racing in all six Wild West Shootout events in 2011. "I graduated and will be here all week."

The rest of the field is officially on notice.

HORTON HAS 10,000 REASONS TO LOVE EAST BAY NeSMITH CHEVROLET DLMS RACING

TAMPA, FL – Doug Horton of Bruceton Mills, WV has 10,000 reasons in the form of dollars to love NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series racing at East Bay Raceway Park.  Horton drove the Adams Used Auto Parts Warrior to victory on Saturday night at “The Clay By The Bay” in the 6th Annual NeSmith Chevrolet World Championship Race.

Horton started sixth and rode in the fifth spot for the first two-thirds of the 100 lap race before making his move to the front of the pack.  Horton took the lead on lap 72, and went on to collect the $10,000 top prize.  It was a big payday for the driver using a $5,000 GM Performance 604 Crate Engine, a form of racing that the winner has a lot of respect for.

“There were a lot of good super late model drivers in this race tonight, and I don’t know what they think, but the guys that race with these crate engines are good because when these cars get a push where the car won’t turn left, you don’t have the horsepower a super late model has to pull you out of it,” Horton said.  “You really have to drive these cars and this win special because of that.”

One of the super late drivers Horton spoke of was Tim McCreadie of Watertown, NY, who led 60 laps of the race in quest of his second straight World Championship Race win, but came up one spot short and finished second in the Image Skin Care Rocket.  Randy Weaver of Crossville, TN came on strong at the end of the race and finished third in the Cardinal Paint and Body Warrior.

Dennis Franklin of Gaffney, SC was fourth in the AES, Inc. Barry Wright, and Jeff Smith of Chatsworth, GA took the fifth spot in the Josh Roberts Trucking Warrior.  Phillip Cobb of Riverview, FL finished sixth in the Mathis Farms Barry Wright, and Bryan Bernhardt of Clearwater, FL was seventh in the B&B Precision Mowing Rocket.

Steve Mathis of Plant City, FL finished eighth in the Mathis Farms Rayburn, and the 2008 NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series National Champion Chip Brindle of Chatsworth, GA started 21st and charged his way through the field to take the ninth spot in the Bryson Motorsports Barry Wright.  Dan Breuer of Troutman, NC rounded out the top ten in the AES, Inc. Barry Wright.

McCreadie was the fast qualifier among the 44 entrants with a lap around the 1/3-mile clay oval in 16.197 seconds and then won the first 15-lap heat race on Friday night to earn the pole position for Saturday night’s main event.  When the field went green for the century grind, it was second heat race winner and outside front row starter Jonathan Davenport of Cowpens, SC taking the lead in the Baird Motorsports Barry Wright.

Davenport led McCreadie, Bernhardt, Smith and Horton during the opening laps before encountering the cars on the tail of the lead lap on lap ten.  McCreadie caught Davenport in lapped traffic on lap 11, and on lap 12 used a lapped car for pick to take the lead in turn four.

The first caution flag came out on lap 15 when Jeff Mathews of Dover, FL stalled the Night Hawk Towing Rocket on the front straightaway.  McCreadie led Davenport, Smith, Bernhardt, Horton, Jack Nosbisch Jr. of Riverview, FL in the Adams Used Auto Parts Rocket, Weaver, Franklin, Travis Varnadore of Dover, FL in the L. Miller and Associates Rayburn, and Shan Smith of Dade City, FL in the Outlaw Racing Parts TNT down for the restart.

By lap 20, McCreadie, Davenport and Jeff Smith had pulled out to a half straightaway lead over the fourth-place car of Bernhardt.  The second caution lap came out on lap 26 when Shan Smith blew a radiator hose and spun in turn three in a cloud of steam.  Davenport chose the inside for the Dixie-Style double-file restart behind McCreadie.  That put Jeff Smith on the outside in the third spot.

When the green flag came back out, Smith drove by Davenport for the second spot, and Cobb moved up into the top ten.  Doug Watson of Lithia, FL spun his Brandon Auto Salvage Rocket in turn two on lap 28 to bring out the third caution, and Breuer spun in turn one on the restart.  Davenport got around Smith on the next restart to reclaim the second spot.

The caution bulb was lit up for the fifth time on lap 38 when Chase Washington of Houlka, MS stalled the Greg’s Sawmill GRT in turn two.  When the field went back to green flag racing, McCreadie pulled away while Davenport and Smith battled for the second spot.  Smith got around Davenport for second on lap 41, while McCreadie enjoyed a full straightaway lead.

At the halfway point, McCreadie opened up a six second lead over Smith when he caught lapped traffic.  While McCreadie was trying to negotiate around the lapped cars, Smith turned up the wick and was gaining a second a lap, catching the leader by lap 55.  McCreadie was able to work his way through the traffic, while Smith was also trying to get through the gauntlet as Davenport challenged him from the third spot.

Davenport once again took over the second spot on lap 65 when made an inside move on Smith going down the backstretch.  Watson stalled on the backstretch on lap 67 to bring out the sixth caution flag.  McCreadie led Davenport, Smith, Bernhardt, Horton, Franklin, Nosbisch, Cobb, Weaver and Mathis down to the green flag for the restart.

Several drivers began to make moves, some going forward and others going backwards, when the green flag came back out.  Smith passed Davenport for second on the restart, while Horton and Franklin got by Bernhardt to take over the fourth and fifth spots respectively.  Nosbisch fell off the pace before stalling on the backstretch on lap 68 to bring out the seventh caution flag.

Horton passed Davenport for the third spot on the restart, but the field was slowed by the caution flag on lap 69 when Rodney Wing of Meridian, MS in the Night Hawk Towing Rocket and Matthew Turner of Dawsonville, GA in the Turner Excavating DWB tangled in turn two.  McCreadie led Smith, Horton, Davenport, Franklin, Bernhardt, Weaver, Mathis, Brindle and Varnadore down for the restart.

Horton pounced on Smith to take over the second spot when the green came back out, Franklin climbed into the third spot, Smith fell back to fourth, Bernhardt settled into fifth, and Davenport dropped back to the sixth spot.  Horton was all over McCreadie to challenge for the lead, and drove by him on the outside in turn four on lap 72 to grab the point.

Just as Horton encountered lapped traffic, Davenport brought out the final caution flag of the race on lap 81 when he spun in turn four.  Horton led McCreadie, Franklin, Smith, Bernhardt, Mathis, Weaver, Cobb, Varnadore, and Brindle down for the restart.  Weaver made a big move when the green bulb was lit, as he moved from seventh to fourth.

Horton maintained his lead over McCreadie in the final 20 laps, while Weaver got by Franklin for the third spot on lap 95.  McCreadie and Weaver got close to the leader in lapped traffic, but neither could challenge for the win.

In preliminary action on Friday night, the four 15-lap heat races were won by McCreadie, Davenport, Bernhardt, and Jeff Smith.  On Saturday night, the 20-lap B-Main Races were won by Josh Peacock of Dover, FL in the Frubob Fruit Floats Warrior and Breuer.

T-MAC TAKES POLE FOR EAST BAY NeSMITH CHEVROLET WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP RACE

TAMPA, FL – Tim McCreadie of Watertown, NY will start on the pole position for the $10,000-to-win 100-lap 6th Annual NeSmith Chevrolet World Championship Race on Saturday night at East Bay Raceway Park for the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series.  The defending race champion was the fast qualifier and won the first heat race in the Image Skin Care Rocket.

On Friday night, Qualifying and four 15-lap heat races took place to set the first 16 starting spots for Saturday night’s main event.  Jonathan Davenport of Cowpens, SC won the second heat race and will start outside of McCreadie in the front row driving the Baird Transport Barry Wright.

The 2010 East Bay Raceway Park Race Car Engineering Late Model Champion Bryan Bernhardt of Clearwater, FL drove the B&B Precision Mowing Rocket to victory in the third heat race and will start the big show on Saturday night from the inside of row two.  Jeff Smith of Chatsworth, GA starts the main event from the outside of the second row after winning the fourth heat race in the Josh Roberts Trucking Warrior.

After winning the race last year, McCreadie picked up where he left off, as he was the fast qualifier among the 44 entrants with a lap around the 1/3-mile clay oval in 16.197 seconds to earn the pole position for the first heat race.  T-Mac led wire-to-wire to win the first heat and earn the pole position for his defense of the ten-thousand dollar top prize.

The top four finishers in each heat race earned a starting spot in the big show.  Jack Nosbisch Jr. of Riverview, FL in the Adams Used Auto Parts Rocket, Travis Varnadore of Valrico, FL in the L. Miller & Associates Rayburn, and National Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame Inductee Ronnie Johnson of Chattanooga, TN finished second through fourth respectively in the first heat.

Nosbisch starts fifth, Varnadore lines up ninth, and Johnson takes the green flag for the big show from the inside of row seven in the Miller Brothers Coal Warrior.  Joining Davenport in transferring to the main event out of the second heat race were Doug Horton of Bruceton Mills, WV, Jeff Mathews of Dover, FL, and Rodney Wing of Meridian, MS.

Horton will start the Adams Used Auto Parts Warrior in the main event from the sixth starting slot, Mathews will line up tenth in the Night Hawk Towing Rocket, and his teammate Wing starts his Night Hawk Towing Rocket 14th for the main event.

Second through fourth respectively in the third heat race were Dennis Franklin of Gaffney, SC in the AES, Inc. Barry Wright, Phillip Cobb of Riverview, FL in the Mathis Farms Barry Wright, and Doug Watson of Lithia, FL in the Brandon Auto Salvage Rocket.  Franklin starts the main event seventh, Cobb starts 11th, and Watson starts the big show from the 15th starting spot.

Randy Weaver of Crossville, TN, Shan Smith of Dade City, FL, and Steve Mathis of Plant City, FL followed Jeff Smith under the checkered flag in the fourth heat.  Weaver starts Saturday night’s race from the eighth spot in the Cardinal Paint and Body Warrior, Shan Smith in the Outlaw Race Parts TNT starts 12th, and Mathis starts 16th in the Mathis Farms Rayburn.

Drivers that finished fifth through 11th in their respective heat races on Friday night will have another opportunity to make the 24-car starting field through one of two 20-lap B-Main races on Saturday night.  The top three finishers in each B-Main race will fill in starting positions 17 through 22.

Starting positions 23 and 24 are NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series Provisional spots reserved for the Top 15 in the National point standings that fail to qualify for the main event through heat race or B-Main competition.

Among the drivers still looking to race their way into the big show are UMP Champions Scott Weber of Festus, MO in the Joe Kehrer Roofing Rocket and Jason Feger of Mount Vernon, IL in the Ricks Towing Rayburn.  There are also four NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series Top 15 drivers still on the outside looking in.

The 2010 NeSmith Chevrolet DLMS National Championship Runner-Up Matthew Turner of Dawsonville, GA will start a B-Main in the Turner Excavating DWB, along with the 2010 fifth-place driver Shannon Lee of Lumberton, MS in the Billy Riels Racing DWB, the sixth-place driver “Chargin’ Charlie” Henderson of Cottondale, AL in the Century Dedicated, Inc. Rodney Wing Pulls Clean Sweep of PRO Foes at Magnolia Motor Speedway

West Memphis, Arkansas (11/28/10) – Less than 24 hours after claiming his first career series’ win, Rodney Wing made a repeated performance on Sunday evening by claiming the $3,000 payday in the 10th Annual Possum Town Grand Prix, which was co-sanctioned by the P.R.O. Dirt Car Super Late Model Series and the NeSmith Super Dirt Car Super Late Model Series.

A strong field of thirty-eight Super Late Models entered the $3,000 to win event, and for the second straight night Wing earned the Southern Belle Pole Award. He was joined on the front row by Collinsville, Mississippi driver, Steve Bryan. The initial start of the race would be nullified as Tony Shelton spun from his 14th starting position to bring out the caution. The ensuing attempt to get the race underway was a success as Wing took control of the top spot with David Breazeale, Steve Bryan, Riley Hickman, and Kyle Beard in pursuit.

The field would battle two and three wide during the early laps of the feature before the first caution flew on lap seven as Dean Carpenter and Jamie Elam spun down the backstretch. At the time of the caution the top five in the running order consisted of Wing, Breazeale, Bryan, Hickman, and Neil Baggett.

As the race resumed green flag conditions, Breazeale continued to pursue Wing for the lead as Ronnie Johnson found his way past Baggett for the fifth spot.

The event would be slowed again on lap 24 as Neil Baggett slowed down the front stretch, relinquishing his top ten position. When the race resumed green flag conditions Breazeale turned up the wick on Wing for the lead, but as the track began to take heavy rubber, passing would become difficult.

The top ten runners would be content to run nose to tail for the balance of the event with Rodney Wing taking the win as David Breazeale, Steve Bryan, Mathew Turner, and Riley Hickman rounded out the top five. Ronnie Johnson initially finished fourth at the checkered flag, but was found light at the scales after the race and was scored last.

Brian Rickman claimed the American Race Tires Hard Charger Award after advancing from the 24th starting position to a 12th place finish.

David Breazeale claimed the PRO Dirt Car Series and NeSmith Super Dirt Car Series Championship with his weekend performances. With only the top ten finishes for each driver counting toward their final point’s total, the final points’ standings are currently being tabulated and will be released this week.

The event concluded the 2010 PRO Dirt Car Series tour as the series enjoyed a successful first season. Dates are currently being made for 2011, and any tracks, who are interested in booking events should contact Mike Mauldin at 662-213-3047. JOHNSON MASTERS THE MAG FOR 14TH CAREER NeSMITH CHEVROLET DLMS WIN

COLUMBUS, MS – Ronnie Johnson of Chattanooga, TN raced to his 14th career NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series National Touring win on Sunday night at Magnolia Motor Speedway driving the Miller Brothers Coal Warrior.  Johnson held off a rival from days gone by to win the 40-lap main event.

It was a flashback to the mid-90s Hav-A-Tampa Dirt Late Model Series as the National Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame Inductee battled with Johnny Virden of Russellville, AR right down to the checkered flag.  Virden made several challenges in the final laps, but had to settle for second in the Frye Motorsports GRT.

“I really appreciate the way Johnny Virden raced me tonight as we raced close, but never touched,” Johnson said.  “It was a good race for the fans, as we had to chase the track all night long.  At first it was tacky, then it slicked up, and then it rubbered up, so I had to keep looking for the right groove for the track conditions.”

Johnson found a groove just off the bottom of the track in the closing laps, and he left enough real estate for Virden to run the very bottom of the track.  Virden was able to get the nose of his race car to the inside of Johnson on several occasions, but Johnson was able to beat him off the corner to post the victory.

Evan Ellis of Plantersville, MS took the third spot in the Ellis Certified Welders Mastersbilt and was the VP Racing Fuels Rookie of the Race.  Jamie Tollison of Kosciusko, MS finished fourth in the Tollison’s Auto Repair Trak-Star and the 2010 NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series East Region Champion Chase Edge of Lafayette, AL was fifth in the Edge’s Gas Company Mastersbilt.

Jeremy Shaw of Millport, AL started 17th and charged through the field to finish sixth in the Summit Resource Development Trak-Star and earn the GM Performance Parts Hard Charger Award.  Matthew Turner of Dawsonville, GA was seventh in the Turner Excavating DWB, and Shannon Lee of Lumberton, MS finished eighth in the Billy Riels Racing DWB.

Eric Cooley of Fulton, MS won his second straight $20,000 NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series National Championship with a ninth-place finish driving the 78 Towing and Recovery Victory Circle.  Cooley now has two National Championships on his resume before celebrating his 20th birthday.

Larry Harrod of Plains, GA rounded out the top ten in the Harrod Logging Scorpion, but more importantly, he also wrapped up the $5,000 VP Racing Fuels Rookie of the Year Award.  Harrod had a couple of anxious moments as he spun on the opening lap of the race, and then at the halfway point in the race, he had to pit to change a cut tire while running in the top ten.

His closest RoY challenger Lee was running fourth at the time, and Harrod returned to the track for the restart at the back of the pack, giving Lee the VP Racing Fuels RoY point lead.  When the checkered flag fell, Lee had dropped to eighth, while Harrod charged back up to the tenth spot to secure the VP Racing Fuels Rookie of the Year Award.

Before the race started, the field came out to roll in the race track after track officials watered the racing surface.  Justin McRee of Tuscaloosa, AL slid into a utility tire marking the inside of the track, damaging his Century Dedicated, Inc. Trak-Star.

McRee and his Henderson Motorsports crew made repairs and “J-Mac” was able to start the race.  McRee had to take a provisional to make the show after coming up light at the scales after his B-Main.  McRee was able to complete 33 laps and finished 17th, which earned him the Dominator Race Products Hard Luck Award after a tough night when nothing seemed to go right.

Finishing behind Cooley in the final 2010 NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series National point standings were Turner, McRee, Harrod, Lee, Charlie Henderson of Cottondale, AL in the Century Dedicated, Inc. HMS, Chris McElhenney of Lake, MS in the G&M Trucking Trak-Star, Michael Blount of Sumrall, MS in the Lamar Auto Salvage Mastersbilt, and Marcus Minga of Shannon, MS in the B&M Salvage Rocket.

Johnny Stokes of Columbus, MS in the TJC Mortgage GRT rounded out the top ten in the NeSmith Chevrolet DLMS National point standings to go with his 2010 NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series West Region Championship.

In preliminary action, Lee took fast time honors among the 38 entrants with a lap around the 3/8-mile clay oval in 15.621 seconds.  The two 15-lap B-Main races were won by Stokes and Harrod.

Lee took the lead at the start of the race followed by Virden and Johnson, who raced side-by-side for the second spot.  The yellow flag came out on the opening lap when Harrod spun in turn three collecting Dylan Ames of Harvest, AL in the Ames Racing Rocket and Jamie Flannagan of Tuscumbia, AL in the Seven Springs Lodge Rayburn.

Since a lap had not been completed, everyone got their spot back for the complete restart that saw Lee once again taking the point followed by Virden, Johnson, Turner, Ellis.  The second caution flag came out on lap two when McRee and Victor Turner of Munford, AL in the Bentley Speed Graphix Rocket got together in turn three.

Lee led the field down for the restart, and Johnson, who started outside Virden in the “Dixie-Style” double-file restart, got by to claim the second spot.  Ellis used the same outside move to pass Turner for the fourth position.  The third caution flag came out on lap four when Ryan King of Anniston, AL stalled the True Bond Masonry TSR on the front straightaway.

With Lee in front, Johnson choose the outside for the restart.  When the green flag came out, “The Chattanooga Flash” got a run on Lee going down the backstretch to take the lead, bringing Ellis with him on the outside, who passed Virden for the third spot.  Ellis stepped to the outside on lap nine to pass Lee for second, while Shaw had charged from the 17th starting spot to sixth.

Virden got by Lee to move back up to third on lap ten, while Shaw climbed into the top five passing Tollison for the position on lap 13.  By lap 15, Johnson was in heavy lapped traffic, but that went away at the halfway point of the race when the fourth and final caution flag flew for a turn four spin by Chase Washington of Houlka, MS in the Greg’s Sawmill GRT.

Johnson led Ellis, Virden, Lee, Shaw, Tollison, Turner, and Edge down for the restart.  Ellis chose the inside for the double-file restart, with Virden to his right on the outside.  When the green flag came out, Virden got around Ellis for the second spot and Tollison drove around Shaw and Lee to grab the fourth position.

Virden got an outside run on Johnson going into turn one on lap 22, but Johnson was able to hold him off.  As the lead duo hit turn three, Virden crossed over and got under Johnson to take the lead coming off the fourth turn.  Johnson was able to return the favor on the next lap, getting under Virden to retake the lead.

Johnson held the inside groove while Virden went to the outside to battle side-by-side with Johnson for the lead on laps 26 and 27.  Unable to knock Johnson off the point, Virden went to the inside on lap 30.  Johnson started to pull away on lap 33, but with three laps to go, Virden reloaded for another shot at the lead and the win.

Virden looked to the inside of Johnson during the last two laps, but Johnson was up to the challenge, getting the better bite off the corners, and holding on to take his second NeSmith Chevrolet DLMS National Touring win of the season.

The next event for the NeSmith Chevrolet DLMS will be the $10,000-to-win 100-lap 6th Annual World Championship Race at East Bay Raceway Park in Tampa, FL on December 10-11.

SHAW SWEEPS NeSMITH CHEVROLET WRS INVITATIONAL RACE AT THE MAG

COLUMBUS, MS – Jeremy Shaw of Millport, AL swept the 5th Annual NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series Invitational Race on Saturday night at Magnolia Motor Speedway.  Shaw set fast time among the 31 entrants to start the 25-lap race from the pole position, and then led every lap to win the race driving the Summit Resource Development Trak-Star.

Jamie Tollison of Kosciusko, MS took the second spot in the Tollison’s Auto Repair Trak-Star after an early race side-by-side duel with Johnny Virden of Russellville, AR in the Bill Frye Racing GRT.  Virden finished third, followed by Jamie Flannagan of Tuscumbia, AL in fourth driving the Seven Springs Lodge Rayburn.

Dylan Ames of Harvest, AL charged from the 13th starting spot to finish fifth in the Ames Racing Rocket.  Evan Ellis of Plantersville, MS was sixth in the Ellis Certified Welders Mastersbilt, and Shay Knight of Ethelsville, AL took the seventh spot driving the Dunn’s Autos Mastersbilt.  Sid Scarbrough of Florence, MS finished eighth in the Cliburn Performance GRT.

The Century Dedicated, Inc. team cars rounded out the top ten with Charlie Henderson of Cottondale, AL taking the ninth spot in his HMS and Justin McRee of Tuscaloosa, AL was tenth in his Trak-Star.

Shaw took the lead at the start of the race with Virden and Tollison racing side-by-side for second, followed by Knight and Scarbrough.  On lap two, Scarbrough and Flannagan got by Knight to take the fourth and fifth spots respectively.  The first of three caution flags came out on lap four when Tody Ratcliff of Meridian, MS spun the Henkel Loctite Trak-Star in turn two.

On the restart, a multi-car tangle coming off the fourth turn brought out the second caution flag that sent Jered Smith of Hazlehurst, MS in the Smith Racing Trak-Star, Chad McCool of Millport, AL in the M&M Logging Mastersbilt and Reed Long of Columbus, MS in the Burns Dirt Construction GRT to the pit area for the night.

The field raced for another lap before the third and final caution flag came out on lap five when brothers Johnny Stokes of Columbus, MS in the TJC Mortgage GRT and Mark Stokes of Steens, MS in the Chuck’s Speed Shop Trak-Star got together on the backstretch.  Shaw led Virden, Tollison, Scarbrough, Flannagan, Knight, Burdett, Henderson, Shannon Lee of Lumberton, MS in the Billy Riels Racing DWB and Ellis down for the restart.

Knight got by Flannagan and Scarbrough to move up to the fourth spot on lap six, and Tollison got around Virden for the second position on lap seven.  Flannagan passed Scarbrough for the fifth spot on lap 13.

Shaw began to encounter the cars on the tail of the lead lap on lap 15, and was mired in heavy lapped traffic for the last ten laps of the race, as Tollison began to close the gap.  Shaw was able to keep lapped cars between himself and Tollison, while several drivers made moved among the top ten spots.

Knight began to fade in the closing laps, as he dropped from fourth to seven, while Flannagan moved up to fourth, Ames came blasting through the top ten to take fifth, and Ellis grabbed the sixth spot.  The two preliminary ten-lap B-Main races were won by Ellis and Mark Stokes.

The NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series National Tour will be in action on Sunday at Magnolia Motor Speedway for their final points race of the 2010 season, as 19-year-old Eric Cooley of Fulton, MS will attempt to wrap up his second straight $20,000 National Championship in the 40-lap $2,500-to-win event.

Rodney Wing Gets First Career PRO Series Win at Magnolia Motor Speedway

Columbus, Mississippi (11/27/10) – Whynot Motorsports Park promoter, Rodney Wing, continued his torrid late season pace behind the wheel of a Thrash Motorsports entry as he powered the #1c Thrash Motorsports/ Rocket Super Late Model to the $2,000 PRO Dirt Car Series feature win at Magnolia Motor Speedway (Columbus, Mississippi) on Saturday night.

Forty-eight Super Late Models entered the event as first year Super Late Model racer, Jason Brock, blazed to the Southern Belle Pole Award in time trials. He was joined on the front row for the feature event by fellow first year, Super Late Model racer, TK King from Columbus, Mississippi. At the drop of the green flag in the feature, Brock would bolt to the top spot with David Breazeale and Rodney Wing in pursuit as King began to fade.

Jason Brock held the top spot during the early laps of the event as Wing moved past Breazeale to take the second spot on lap four, and one lap later Wing would use a power move on the high side exiting turn four to take the lead from Brock as Breazeale began to work on Brock for second.

The leaders would enter lapped traffic by lap ten and the next five laps would see great racing through lapped traffic before the first caution of the event waved on lap 15 for Scott Flurry, who made hard contact with the turn four wall, bringing his night to an early end.

With Wing at the point and Breazeale and Jason Brock in tow the event got back underway as Neil Baggett launched himself from the fifth spot to the second spot on the restart. Baggett would start to reel in the leader before the caution flew on lap 19 for fourth running, Dane Dacus, who saw his night come to an end after hard contact with the turn four wall.

The top five running order for the restart consisted of Wing, Baggett, Breazeale, Wade Byars, and Jake Knight.

On the restart the running order would remain the same as the event would see a five lap run before the final caution flew on lap 25 as Tony Morris duplicated the feats of other competitors in the feature by making hard contact with the turn four wall.

As the field went green for the final time, it appeared that Rodney Wing was on his way to the comfortable win, but Baggett and Thrash would have other ideas as they caught the leader by lap 30 as they battled side-by-side for the second spot. Breazeale cleared Baggett with three laps to go as he set his sights on the leader. However, Wing would go on to lead the finals laps to claim the win over David Breazeale, Neil Baggett, Wade Byars, and Mathew Turner.

The PRO Dirt Car Series will wrap up their 2010 season on Sunday afternoon with a $3,000 to win/$200 to start, 40 lap event at Magnolia Motor Speedway. Gates open at 10a.m. with the driver’s meeting at 1pm and racing action to follow. Ludlow Wins Thunder Hill 30.

In a dominatant display second generation racer Brad Ludlow has won the Thunder Hill 30 at Makit Hardware Narrogin Speedway in his DiCandilo Steel City/Lucas Oils #9 GRT. Ludlow adapted to the tight confines of the Narrogin oval from the get-go as he won both his qualifying heats, the A-Dash and the final in fine fashion during round 4 of the R2C Competition Filters Pro Dirt Series

“We just had to get in the first turn with the lead and drive defensive, not do anything silly and bought it home. We selected a softer tyre to hold the lead for the first part of the race as we run the American Racers and the Hoosiers come on better at the end. I was getting frustrated with all the restarts at the end but Brad Blake was there and he showed me respect and drove me pretty clean” the winner said afterwards.

The night started poorly though for father Ben Ludlow as he bolted away at the start of heat number 1a only for it to all come undone as he started to come up on lapped traffic. After hitting the kerb on the inside of turn two something broke in the right front suspension and he would smash in to the back straight concrete wall. He exited his DiCandilo Steel City/Lucas Oils #9 GRT in one piece but his night was over.

Blake (Blake Auto Centre #0 Rocket) would inherit the lead and would hold on to it until the checkered flag fell, winning over Craig Vosbergen (Worldwide Construction Machinery/RACIN Tyres & Accessories #8 Rocket) and Jay Cardy (BBT Steel/TL Dozing #52 Cardy Chassis).

Heat number 1b was an all the way win for Brad Ludlow as he drove away from the rest of the field but the race for second was a corker. Jason Oldfiled in the Ultratune Morley/Shakerz Bakerz #51w Warrior raced side by side with Bunbury racer Mick Hamon (Valvoline/ACDC Welding #57 Rocket) over the entire ten lap distance. Hamon thew everything he could at Oldfield but couldn’t make an effective pass on the #51w machine before the checkered flag fell.

Ludlow would start at the rear of heat number 2a but it would be of no hinderance to him as he weaved his way to the lead in a brilliant display of driving that saw the #92 GRT hit the lead at mid race distance. He ran some of the fastest lap times seen since American Doug Drown ran at the same venue a couple of season ago to take the win over Matt Goodladd (Diversified Contracting/JRH Signs #18 Rocket) and Blake

The final qualifier saw Vosbergen take over the lead on the fourth lap and was never pressured during the rest of the event, taking a strong win over Cardy and Hamon.

Dash one Ludlow lead all the way in another strong drive to earn pole for the 35 lap finale while Mark Matthews (Tilco/RACIN Tyres & Accessories #30 Rocket) was too good for the rest in dash 2 to qualify out of position seven for the A-Main.

The final would see a number of stoppages as a number of racers would miss the set up for the quickly drying track which saw a number of drivers spinning and others doing the same to avoid them. Through all of this Brad Ludlow held steady as Blake threw everything he could at Ludlow as Vosbergen hounded the two of them the entire race distance. Each and every lap these three raced nose to tail, side by side and all that was needed was for one of them to make a mistake, but to all three drivers credit they put in an almost flawless performance to produce one of the tightest finishes seen this season in the LMRA.

In the end Ludlow claimed first over Blake, Vosbergen, Michael Holmes (OzMine/Holmes & Associates #91 Rocket), Oldfield, Matthews and Keith Gorman (Kawasaki Country/Cassons #75 Cardy Chassis) and Hamon crossing the line as the final runner.

Naturally the happy winner was on cloud nine as he explained afterwards “This tyre (right rear) won the final night at Kwinana last year and broke the track record, won the grand opening night at Kwinana this season and broke the track record and we won every race down here tonight with it. I’m gonna frame that thing it’s been a great tyre!” Sounds like it’s been a good investment Brad.

All the teams are now battling against the clock as they ready their machines for next weekends meeting at the Perth Motorplex in what will be round 5 of the R2C Competition Filters Pro Dirt Series.

DAVENPORT DENIES ERB GOBBLER 22 TITLE: S.A.S 2010 FINALE SUPERMAN AGAIN AT CLEVELAND

Cleveland, TN (11/20/2010) --- Just like the 2010 season opener, the Cleveland (TN) Speedway season finale was closed by racer Jonathan Davenport of Blairesville, GA whom picked up the $5,000, "GOBBLER 22" title Saturday night, leading all 50 laps of the Southern All-Star "A" Main Feature race. The racer known (around insiders) as SUPERMAN, flew around the dirt track with immense precision hold off Illinois' racer Dennis Erb Jr. and eventual runner-up Clint Smith. "We kicked off 2010 here and this is a nice way to wrap up our SLM program this year, with a victory" stated JD on the front-stretch, after the races conclusion. At racetime 32 Super Late Models signed-in for the 22nd annual JOE LEE JOHNSON MEMORIAL / GOBBLER event. It seemed Davenport was to be fastest of the field, til the 2nd to the last qualifier (Erb) took to the track. Erb clocked a 14:239 lap, handing Davenport the outside FRONT ROW JOE starting position. Skip Arp set 3rd quickest time with Knoxville's Mark Douglas and Louisiana's Scott Creel rounding out the Top 5 racers. Five-time DIRT TRACK WORLD CHAMPION Freddy Smith led the charge of qualifiers 6th thru 10th, with 2011 newly announced teammates Brian Reese and Clint Smith, David Payne and Shane Clanton all getting locked-in to the feature based on their qualifying times.

In the 1st of two "B" Mains; Mike Hill took on recent GRANT ADCOX MEMORIAL race winner Riley Hickman. Following them across the finish were Benji Cole, local Ringgold, GA racer Kevin Gibson, Brett Wyatt and Jake Knowles. B-Main #2 saw ROCKET-BOY Tommy Kerr dance with Chatsworth, GA racer Derek Ellis. Chad Ogle, points leader Randy Weaver, Jeff Neubert and Billy Ogle Jr. rounded out the transferee's. Kentucky's Doug Smith and West Virginia's Daniel Baggerly took S.A.S provisionals to get "A" Main starting positions 23 & 24. After the traditional 4-WIDE SALUTE to the fans, Davenport rocketed into the lead from his CAT-BIRDS SEAT leaving pole sitter Erb to battle Mark Douglas. Sixth starting F. Smith rears caution #1 on Lap #1 with a flat tire and damage to the rear after contact with C. Ogle. Douglas makes quick work of Erb on the restart, taking over second til D. Smith rears a solo caution on lap 12. This restart and Erb continues to hold Douglas while CAT-DADDY and Arp battle for 4th place. Just past half-way Erb finally shows some strength and get by Douglas, only to have a flat and have to pit for a new tire. Inside 10 remaining and C. Smith comes to life passing Douglas. Too little, too late as Davenport strolls to victory despite one final caution with three laps remaining. Behind JD and CAT is Payne and Arp.

The $2,500 LLM/Crate "A" Main feature was won by former ICE BOWL champion Bobby Mayse of Harrison, TN in the # 22 "Mayse Construction" GRT racecar. Knoxville's Mark Rosner was 2nd, with Crossville's Brandon Williams 3rd. Steve Smith of Powell was 4th and local racer Rick Hixson was 5th. There were 36 LLM/Crate's signed in for Friday's preliminary action. Booger Brooks of Chattanooga, won both the $1,000 A-Hobby race and the $1,000 B-Hobby race. Michael Courtney of Knoxville won the Pony feature worth $1,000 and Donald Forgey of Cleveland won the FWD porton of the JOE LEE JOHNSON MEMORIAL / GOBBLER weekend. For more information on Cleveland Speedway visit the web-site www.clevelandspeedway.com. The 2011 season is tentative to kick-off in March with the annual SHAMROCK 60 event.

A Full Moon And A Completed Season

by Jimmy Rouse- Ocala Speedway Media

It was the final night of action in 2010 at Ocala Speedway and the races didn't disappoint. The Late Models headlined the night while the Tee Pee Tire Hobby Stocks and Gladiators battled for points. The Amsoil V-8 Thunderstocks had their night where no winners from 2010 were allowed to run and the fans saw some great racing all around.

Up first were the Amsoil V-8 Thunderstocks and everyone in the field wanted to prove that they could win. On lap 2, Eddie Lake took his 96 for a spin while Gordon Cade and Michael Carr made contact that neither needed. When the race got back under way, Lake started charging to the front. Just 2 laps from the finish, Brian Shea and heat race winner Kenny Asbell, Jr. made contact sending Asbell spinning into the infield. Mickey Jackson stopped in turn 4 and set up a 1 lap dash. To add to the excitement, race leader Ronnie Harrell had an overheating engine. Harrell held off a hard-charging Jesse Corbitt for the win while Eddie Lake climbed all the way up to 3rd, Sean Babcock went home in 4th, and Jonathan Appleby rounded out the top 5.

The Gladiators were out one last time, trying to make up all the points they could. On lap 1, Chase Gustafson looped the 10G under the scoreboard, and was able to continue. The yellow came out again on lap 5 when Hunter Gustafson and Rebecca Paugh made contact in turn 2, while Larry Nelson and Reid Christensen touched, Christensen getting the worst of it. Steve Cox, Jr. passed Kyle Morse for the lead and was sailing away when Devin Walker got loose in turn 2 and Casey Feaster, with nowhere to go, tapped Walker's left rear and sent Walker into a spin. That set up a 4 lap dash to the checkers. Cox made a great restart and pulled away from Morse and didn't slow down until after he took the checkered flag. Kyle Morse started and finished 2nd, Art Souther finished 3rd, Matt Shea took a very quiet 4th, and Robert Graham was 5th.

The Tee Pee Tire Hobby Stocks had 3 mathematical contenders for the title- Dean Jarvis, Heath Walker, and Danny Miller, Jr.- and no one was going to lose the title without a fight. On lap 7, though, Danny Miller and Jeff Miller made contact, ending Danny Miller's night and championship hopes. The race up front got tighter when Jody Wells had to slow because his engine wasn't going 100%. Heath Walker and Steve Mooers were catching him when Walker slowed in turn 3. The yellow came out while the white was displayed and as Wells and Mooers made game plans for the restart, Walker was pushed to the pits. As upsetting as it was for Walker, the car was fine and actually refired while in the pits. Walker did not return to the track, but Jody Wells returned to somewhere he loves- victory lane. Wells beat Steve Mooers in a great 1 lap battle as Brian Jerrels muscled his way around Dean Jarvis for 3rd and a trophy. The asphalt-turned-dirt driver, Tommy Ausburn, finished in a respectable 5th.

As the Late Models lined up, Mark Whitener's 58 went straight to the infield. There was no Whitener in it because he was borrowing Joe Kump's J17 for the night. On lap 5, Mark Whitener got caught in traffic and had to make an evasive move which sent the J17 around and almost into the turn 1 wall. Whitener was allowed to restart 2nd because the yellow was out before he spun. Whitener moved past David Clegg on the restart and on lap 6 the yellow came out for debris in turn 1. The season had 9 laps to go when Ivedent Lloyd, Jr. passed Whitener for the lead. Len Parrish slipped up the track and stopped, bringing out the yellow with 8 laps to go. On the restart, Whitener could do nothing with Lloyd, and Lloyd ran away with another win. Whitener finished 2nd, David Clegg 3rd, Keith Nosbisch 4th, and Christian Augspurger 5th.

Ocala Speedway rests very little, but brings some of the best racing around. For more information about next season and all winter events you may call the Speedway or visit www.ocalaspeedway.com.

Dean Bowen sails away with the win at Fayetteville and Dennis Franklin claims the 2010 Carolina Clash Championship

By: Alex Cummings

Dean Bowen did everything he could to try and wrestle away the point’s championship from Dennis Franklin at the Clash Bash season finale Saturday night at Fayetteville Motor Speedway including winning the race but it just wasn’t enough. Coming into Saturday nights race Bowen trailed Franklin by just 40 points which was the difference between finishing 1st and 8th. Bowen qualified on the outside pole and led all 50 laps in the feature event winning the $5,000 prize but it just wasn’t enough to take the crown from Franklin who finished the race in the 5th position. Ricky Weeks came home in the 3rd position in the final points by a mere 9 points over Jay Sessoms.

The race was also a very special tribute race to the late Jack Starrette in which a few drivers said a few words about Jack along with long time Carolina Clash Announcer Larry Long and current Carolina Clash Announcer Mark Huey. It was a special night and one that will stick in the minds and hearts of everyone in attendance.

The drop of the green flag saw Chris Meadows and Dean Bowen drag race into turn 1 but Bowen used the faster, high groove in turn 2 to make the pass on Meadows and set sail. Craig Shuffield pulled in on the very first lap after blowing his motor. Then on the very next lap, Brian Ledbetter, Chuck Smith, Jay Sessoms, and Dale Hammond all tangled in turn 4 bringing out the caution. Dean Bowen was out front leading the field but pressured heavily by Dennis Franklin was made his way up the 3rd place by the very first lap. Lap 2 then saw another major pileup in turn 2 when Steve Blackburn spun collecting Chuck Smith, Gary Mabe, Kerry King, and Chris Ferguson. Ferguson had the worst end of the stick when he slammed into King causing his car to go airborne but landed on all 4 wheels.

Lap 5 saw Dennis Franklin make the pass for the 2nd place position on the track and was catching Bowen out front until another caution on lap 7 when Ricky Weeks broke something in the rearend and came to rest on the frontstretch. He would be able to fix the car and make it back out on the track 20 laps down to finish the race in 16th.

On lap 8, a major pileup in turn 4 co
