DEREK ELLIS WINS CLEVELAND SLM SEASON OPENER SLOBBERKNOCKER
Cleveland, TN (3/6/10) -- The DITCH DIGGER Derek Ellis of Chatsworth, Georgia won Saturday nights 2010 Cleveland (TN) Speedway season opener. The nights Super Late Model 30-lap feature produced three lead changes and a hard-charge from young William Thomas (aka. WILLY-T) whom started 13th in a field of fifteen starters. Jake Knowles set fast time blazing a 13:528 lap during qualifying time trials. Knowles went on to win heat #1 after Thomas smacked the wall while leading, trying to get by a backmarker racecar. Second quick qualifier Preston Graves won heat #2 after Billy Mayo led early, for the outside FRONT ROW JOE honors. At the start Knowles looked outta sequence as Graves got the lead. Ellis put Knowles as far back as third and even got under Graves as a slower car infront of the leaders nearly crashed. Knowles high-side finally came in around the half-way point giving the lead to the pole-sitter for the first time. A late caution with a little over 10 laps remaining negated a half straightaway lead built by Knowles. By this time Thomas had cracked the Top 5 and was ready to battle the Top 3. This was also Ellis' time as the # 99 "Ellis Contracting, Auto Zone, Gene's Racing Parts, Wilson Welding, Outlaw Racing Graphics" sponsored Rocket racer dove under Knowles to take the lead on the ensuing restart. Thomas worked past Graves and eventually Knowles for 2nd, but even a lap 25 caution would not deny Ellis the victory. Mayo worked back to a 4th place finish behind WILLY-T and Knowles, with Keith Frazier rounding out the Top 5.
In other Racing Action: Brian Kinnersly and Bobby Mayse dualed for the LLM/Crate Feature. Kinnersly took the win with Mayse, Brandon Williams, Tanner Works and Todd Morrow following. A large 7 to 9 car pile-up damaged many of the 20-car field when 4th running Brian Pritchard crashed down the back-stretch. Morrow raced back to a Top 5, after breaking while leading his heat race, after starting 18th in the 20 lap feature. Robbie Greene won the very first feature race of 2010, as the A-Hobby always go first on the feature line-up. Greene held off Dustin Cansler, Jeff Paige, Greg Suddeth and a frailing Richard Dixon. In the B-Hobby it was Jason Brown victorious. The Pony feature was dominated by Jimmy "J" Elliott and the FWD saw Michael Arp take the checkers. Next week (Saturday, March 13th) All Classes will be in competition as All Eyes will be on the S.A.S. series in for the 15th SHAMROCK 60 event. For more detailed info. visit www.clevelandspeedway.com
Surprises Abound At Ocala Speedway Opener
by BJ Cavin
Race fans and racers braved a frosty Florida night as they gathered to reopen the historic Ocala Speedway for another exciting season of racing, and Florida's oldest speedway did not disappoint. The Sunoco United Dirt Late Model Challenge Series was also kicking off their season as a part of the festivities at Ocala, as were Ocala's own Amsoil V8 Thunder Stocks, and the Mini Stocks. The fans and racers also collected over $260 to pass along to the founder and operator of Karnac.com and Real Racin' USA, Jack Smith. Smith has recently been undergoing extensive surgery and was diagnosed with cancer.
Much of the attention on the night went to the Sunoco United Dirt Late Models as the new and improved version of the racing series debuted. The Ocala race officially was part of the new Southern division of the UDLMCS, but racers from the north also participated. Also garnering plenty of attention was the newly formed team included Ocala's own Ivedent Lloyd and Darrell Padgett. That attention to this Roush-Yates powered team would last well into the early morning hours after Ivedent Lloyd wasted no time in setting the bar high, as he set fast time in qualifying with a blistering 16.275 on his second solo lap. Four heat races and a B-main set the field for the feature event, with Keith Nosbisch on the point for the 50 lapper. The B-Main was a last chance for two final cars to transfer to the big race, and Dillon Wood made the cut despite earlier problems that kept him out of contention during heat racing.
As the Sunoco United Dirt Late Model Challenge Series got their feature event underway, Keith Nosbisch headed to the point and took control, while all others gave chase. Trouble came on lap 6 as Jeff Mathews and Philip Cobb tangled, creating the first caution of the race. That incident was only the beginning of what proved to be a very frustrating night for Mathews, who found himself mired in heavy traffic. It also sent the 26 of Dillon Wood to the pits for a quick fix and put him on the rear of the field for the restart.
Also dealing with traffic was 2 time and defending series champion, Johnny Collins. Collins would start the race behind the front rows, and was picking his way forward when Mathews' rough night got a little rougher in turn 4. Jeff Mathews' spin would cause the caution to wave again, bunching up the field behind Keith Nosbisch once more, and when the green waved Nosbisch was being chased by Brandon Dewitt, Bo Allen, Tyler Ivey, and Mark Whitener.
Another fracas would erupt on lap 19 in turn 1, leading to a five car mess between turns 1 and 2 and another caution. That incident would end the night for Jeff Mathews, and also send Darrell Padgett to the pits for the evening as well. That caution seemed to be a signal for the front runners to make bold moves, and those moves began as soon as the green waved again. Lurking just behind the front five for most of the race was a very confident Ivedent Lloyd, who watched for opportunities and pounced as soon as he discovered them. Lloyd had gradually picked off the front runners until he was behind Nosbisch, with Tyler Ivey running in the third spot. Ivey would make a bold move on the 21 machine, but ended up in a spin instead, bringing out a caution and relegating Ivey to the rear. And meanwhile Dillon Wood was making headway back toward the front of the pack after his earlier misfortunes.
By lap 30 it became evident that Ivedent was again on the move, as he pulled up on Keith Nosbisch and cranked up the heat on the race leader. Lloyd took advantage on lap 32 and jumped out front, then began to pull away to lead the field to the checkers. Nosbisch followed Lloyd at the finish, as Dillon Wood managed to climb into the top three followed by Brandon Cameron and Tyler Ivey, who also had to make quick work of the remaining racers to power back to the front. Ivedent Lloyd had displayed a cool confidence all night at Ocala, and that confidence went with him and his crew from the front stretch celebration to the Ocala Speedway tech shed. Sunoco United Dirt Late Model tech officials poured over the top three machines as crews and some hearty fans watched, and sometime before 2 AM the cool confidence of the 21 team began to change. Virtually no one believed that anyone on the 21 team thought that their car had any chance of failing post race tech, but it did.
The order to disassemble the power plant in the 101 of Keith Nosbisch signaled that there would be a different winner than the one that took the checkers first, as the 21 crew dejectedly pushed their car back to their hauler. The 101 was inspected and declared the winner, which moved Dillon Wood to second place and Brandon Cameron to third.
Ocala Speedway's most competitive division also was in action on the night as the Amsoil V8 Thunder Stocks hit the clay for the first time in 2010. Austin Gamble had moved up from the ranks of the Gladiators after last season, and he wasted no time in jumping out front as things got underway. Gamble would remain there as trouble would erupt for another former Gladiator racer, Eddie Lentz, causing the first caution.
Meanwhile Michael Stalnaker was back at Ocala and out to prove that he is tough whether it is on clay or asphalt. Stalnaker battled his way to the front and took control, while Harold Erickson followed in the second spot. Austin Gamble slipped to third and was under attack from the Amsoil sponsored 12 of Jarrod Bennett.
The Amsoil V8 Thunder Stock machines are tough, and the racers are not afraid to go all out even if it means contact with other cars or the wall. And while that makes it an exciting division to watch, it also means that sometimes too many cautions cause too many delays. Time expired on the race during a caution on lap 16, so the racers battled to a green/white/checkered finish.
Michael Stalnaker took a convincing win to earn a visit to Victory Lane, while Harold Erickson held on to second place. Jarrod Bennett placed third followed by Brian Shea and Mike Tyre.
Mini Stock racers wrapped up the feature races with an exciting event that saw all sorts of unexpected surprises in the final laps. Keith Briggs was behind the wheel of the 19T despite a recent hospitalization thanks to back problems, and despite being in pain he battled Nick and Dan Kerr almost to the end. Also in the mix was 2009 division champion, Paul Combast, who tangled with Briggs on lap 4 and banged hard into the front stretch wall at the exit of turn 4.
Combast would battle back from that misfortune to earn a third place finish as more drama played out in front of him. Keith Briggs had fought hard with both Dan and Nick Kerr who were running first and second, with Briggs finally passing the 75 of Nick Kerr for second. Briggs was about to make a move in turn four in the final laps when the 73 machine suddenly spun in front of him, bringing out a caution and putting Briggs in front.
As the green flag waved the crowd looked on in shock as Keith Briggs waved out of his window and pulled aside, allowing the field to pass as he headed off to the pits. Although it was unclear if a mechanical issue happened or if Briggs' pain proved too much, Nick Kerr held off the rest of the field for the win while Dan Kerr followed in second place. Paul Combast settled for third while Mike Oglesby and Buddy Pope rounded out the top five.
Racing returns to Ocala Speedway next Friday night as the Open Wheel Modifieds go at it for the first time in 2010. Also on the card is the debut of the Sportsman cars as a regular division at Ocala. For more information, visit www.OcalaSpeedway.com.

SULLIVAN GRABS FIRST SUPR VICTORY AT TEXAS MOTOR SPEEDWAY
By Bryan Wimberley
FORT WORTH, Texas (Feb. 27) — In finishing first Saturday at Texas Motor Speedway's dirt track, Jack Sullivan of Greenbrier, Ark., posted a couple of career firsts. The 34-year-old polesitter won his first-ever Late Model race in Texas and he captured his first-ever victory on the O'Reilly Southern United Professional Racing tour.
Sullivan, the first-year house car driver for GRT Race Cars, led all 40 laps and outran Billy Moyer of Batesville, Ark., for a victory in the sixth annual Texas World Dirt Track Championship, but not without feeling the heat from the Hall of Famer the last 10 laps. The fourth-starting Moyer got alongside Sullivan a few times and tried many different lines to run him down on the 4/10-mile track, but fell short at the checkered flag by four lengths.
Ray Moore of Haughton, La., advanced 15 positions to finish third and 20th-starting Jason Hughes of Westville, Okla., a standout in modified racing, finished fourth. Another strong mover, Kyle Cummings of Sibley, La., cracked the top five from his 14th starting position. Rob Litton of Alexandria, La., last year's SUPR winner at TMS, ended up eighth after taking a provisional start.
Sullivan was glad to be starting on the pole against a stiff field of a challengers for an event that drew 55 Late Models.
"Any time you have this type of competition, it is way easier to start in the front and let them figure out how to pass you, instead of you pass them," Sullivan said. "If you are going to win these races, you have to qualify or do it in the heats and it panned out tonight for us."
At the outset, Sullivan battled early with Bubba Mullins of West Monroe, La., who made his return to SUPR action. Sullivan built a comfortable lead before a lap-four caution for debris, and Mullins was shuffled back to fourth on the restart by Moyer and Cummings when another yellow appeared on lap five.
Sullivan and Moyer edged away from the field on the restart, holding a five-second lead on the field before Chris Holley slowed in turn two for a lap-18 caution with Sullivan leading Moyer, Moore, Hughes and Cummings. After a final caution when Mullins got out of shape and made contact with Kenny Merchant entering turn three,
Over the final 10 laps, Moyer stayed right with Sullivan, looking for a way into the lead. After following Sullivan, Moyer tried the opposite of Sullivan's groove the final five laps with Moyer appearing faster in turns three and four while Sullivan held his own in turns one and two.
Moyer pulled within a car length on lap 37 in turn three, but Sullivan never faltered. Moyer lost ground when he hit a rough patch in turn three, breaking his momentum and allowing Sullivan to edge away for a .633-second victory.
Next up for SUPR is a March 20 event at Champion Park Speedway in Minden, La.

Texas World Dirt Track Championships @ Texas Motor Speedway Dirt Track, 2/26-27/10
By J M Hallas
Ft. Worth, Tx.,(Feb. 27Th, 2010) The 4/10th mile, semi-banked dirt track at Texas Motor Speedway completed it's annual Texas Dirt Track Championship events Saturday night with championship races in all classes. The SUPR Late Models headlined the night with 55 Late Models signing in, including several pro touring invaders from Arkansas. Final qualifiers were run in the Modified and Limited Modifieds to fill each of their fields for the three big main events capping off the night.
Sullivan Super in Late Model Main
Greenbrier Arkansas' Jack Sullivan wasn't planning on a trip to Texas this weekend, but when the race he had scheduled rained out, the team headed west. After 40-laps Sullivan found himself in the prestigious TMS Victory Lane, and $3,500 richer. Sullivan started on the pole and led every lap, but it wasn't all that easy.
Chasing Sullivan throughout most of the race was yet another pro, Billy Moyer. Moyer caught Sullivan in traffic for the final few circuits, but could get no closer than Sullivan's rear bumper as the Arkansas duo finished one-two to sweep the local SUPR stars.
As green waved on the 22-car SUPER Late Model feature, Sullivan jumped out from the pole, while outside running mate Kenny Merchant slipped high and fell back to fifth. Bubba Mullins, Moyer and Wendall Wallace filed in between the two. Allen Tippen and Kyle Cummings then put Merchant back on lap 2. Moyer got along side Mullins on lap 3 as they ran door to door until yellow waved for a spin by Merchant compounding his early problems.
Under the yellow, Wallace pulled off from the top five. Once back to green Moyer got by Mullins for second with Cummings following to third. Ray Moore then set his sights on Mullins until debris brought out the caution on lap 5. As the top five stayed single file, Jason Hughes took a look under Kevin Sitton for seventh. Moore was able to complete the pass on Mullins for fourth, with Hughes getting around Sitton on lap 7.
Moore than began pressuring Cummings for fourth as the lead duo motored away. Moore and Cummings ran side by side on lap13, as Hughes closed in on both. Sullivan caught the back of the field on lap 14 holding a safe lead on Moyer. Moore took third from Cummings on lap 15. Moyer cut into Sullivan's lead as they exited traffic on lap 17. That gap closed farther on lap 19 when yellow waved for a spin by Chris Holley.
Back under green the race came to halfway with Sullivan, Moyer, Moore, Cummings and Hughes in the top five. Hughes then snared fourth from Cummings on lap 21. In the pack, Merchant was rebounding from his earlier issues making his way back up into the top ten. Mullins tried to dive Merchant on lap 24 but made contact and spun in turn 3.
Two-time TWDTC champion Rob Litton, who had to take a provisional, made his way around Howard Willis for seventh on the restart. The top two again put distance on Moore, Hughes and Cummings by lap 25. With ten to go, Moyer was within four car lengths on Sullivan as the laps wound down. Moyer, who was getting in better, turned up the heat on Sullivan.
Moyer tried a dive bomb move on lap 35 but slid high giving up some ground. Moyer closed the gap as the two hit lapped traffic on lap 38. Moyer tried high several times, getting hung behind a slower car at one point. Sullivan took the white with six car lengths on Moyer. As the checkers waved it was Sullivan in the AAA Diesel Service, JFR Graphics, All-Star Performance, Central Arkansas Pest Control, Vick Hill Racing Engines, GRT Chassis scoring the big win.
“That was some drama,” replied Sullivan about the final laps in traffic with Billy Moyer on his tail. “I just tried not to give him an easy way around. If he was going to get around he was going to have to run high. I wasn't going to let him get under me. I just told myself to breathe, keep cool and hit your marks. Hopefully it will pan out.”
“I knew Billy(Moyer) was back there. I could smell him. I saw him a couple times and I could hear him. I kind of knew if I could slow down and just hit my marks an just get off the corner that he couldn't make a pass. I just didn't want to overshoot the corner and make a mistake. I didn't want to lose the race because of me.”
“We were actually going to go to Alabama, but he weather looked bad. We the car loaded and everyone ready to go so we decided to head west. The only real changes we had to make on the car was weight. With the open motor rules they have we were able to run with them.”

SMITH
WINS NIGHT TWO AT
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
TAMPA, FL –
Shan Smith of Dade City, FL drove the Gardner Racing
Smith made his bid for the win early in the race, as he bolted from his tenth starting spot and was up to third by the end of the first lap. Lap three saw Smith drive by Weaver in the Cardinal Paint and Body Custom to take the second spot.
“I’ve got a lot of laps around this place, and I’ve got a set up that works good when the track rubbers up,” Smith said. “I knew I had to get to the front early, and we were able to use the track conditions to our advantage.”
Weaver finished second followed by Henderson in the Century Carriers, Inc. Mastersbilt, who was also the Rookie of the Race Award winner. Keith Nosbisch of Valrico, FL was fourth in the Miller Lite Rocket, and Devin Dixon of Apollo Beach, FL took the Race Car Engineering 5th-Place Award in the Night Hawk Towing Rocket.
Doug Horton of

Turner remains the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series National point leader with a six-point lead over Cooley in second spot, and a 16-point advantage over Thomas in the third position.
When the green
flag came out, things got busy in a hurry with
The first of
three caution flags came out on lap seven when Chris McElhenney of
Matthews jumped one car on the restart, and he would be penalized two positions on the next caution period, which came out on lap 14 when David Pollen Jr. in the B&D Trucking Rocket caught fire. The fire was extinguished by the track safety crew and Pollen was uninjured. Pollen’s misfortune earned him the Dominator Race Products Hard Luck Award.

When the field went back to green flag action, Smith was able to open up a six car-length lead by lap 34 when the leader began to encounter lapped traffic. Weaver closed in as Smith began to pick his way around lapped cars running the groove he wanted to stay ahead of Weaver.
On lap 38, Weaver was able to get a run on Smith in turn one on the inside, but Smith was up to the challenge and kept the lead. Weaver would get another opportunity with ten laps to go, but couldn’t make the pass. Once Smith cleared the lap cars, he could keep a three car-length gap between himself and Weaver the rest of the way to the checkered flag.
In preliminary action, the four ten-lap heat races were won by Godfrey, McElhenney, Horton, and Smith. The two 12-lap B-Main races were won by Turner and Larry Harrod of Plains, GA in the Harrod Logging Scorpion.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
TAMPA, FL – Devin Dixon of Apollo Beach, FL rode the high line to victory in the Night Hawk Towing Rocket on Thursday night in the 50-lap main event for the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series at East Bay Raceway Park. Dixon used the outside groove to pass early race leader Doug Horton of Bruceton Mills, WV to take the lead on lap 44.
Horton was the
apparent second-place finisher, but his
Randy Weaver of Crossville, TN was moved up to the second spot in the Cardinal Paint and Body Custom, and Dixon’s teammate Jeff Matthews of Dover, FL finished third in the Night Hawk Towing Warrior. The results of the top three finishers are pending further engine inspection after the three nights of racing concludes on Saturday night.
“The track kept
changing throughout the race, and it seemed to come to us the longer the race
went,”
Matthew Turner of Dawsonville, GA had to take a provisional and start the race from the 23rd spot. Turner rallied the Turner Excavating DWB to a fourth-place finish and earned the GM Performance Parts Hard Charger of the Race Award. His finish also put him on top of the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series National point standings with 172 points.
Bryan Bernhardt
of Clearwater, FL was the Race Car Engineering Fifth-Place Award winner in the
B&B Precision Mowing Rocket, and David Pollen Jr. of Tampa, FL took the
Greg Robertson of Waynesboro, VA finished seventh in the Industrial Fabrications Rocket to earn the Joe Gibbs Driven Seventh-Place Award, and Shane Hitt of Buchannon, WV drove the Hitt Enterprises Rocket to the Race Car Engineering Eighth-Place Award.

Cooley moved up to the second spot in the National points chase with 170 points, and Bernhardt is third with 168 points. Larry Harrod of Plains, GA drove the Harrod Logging Scorpion to an 11th-place finish to earn the Rookie of the Race Award and the Mike’s Custom Tanks 11th-Place Award.

came back for the green flag, Horton got to the inside to take the lead from
Henderson, who got shuffled back to fifth behind
The second caution flag of the race came out on lap four when Thomas stalled in turn three. Horton led Dixon, Matthews, Weaver, and Pollen down for the double-file restart. When the green bulb was lit, Matthews powered around the outside of Dixon for the second spot coming off turn two, and then dove to the inside to throw a slider on Horton to take the lead.
Horton used the counter-move to the slide job with the cross over move in turn four to reclaim the point. As Matthews slid up in front of Horton, Horton then turned hard left and dove under Matthews.
Matthews came
back on lap 14 and began to look inside of Horton to make another challenge for
the lead. As the lead duo began to encounter lapped traffic
on lap 15, Horton was able to put some distance between himself and Matthews.
Phillip Cobb of Riverview, FL spun the Mathis Farms Barry Wright in turn two on lap 28 to bring out the fourth caution flag of the race. Horton led Matthews, Dixon, Weaver, McRee, Henderson, Bernhardt, Robertson, Pollen, and McElhenney down for the restart. McRee got by Weaver for the fourth spot on the restart.
The final caution flag of the race was unfurled, and that set up a wild eight lap dash to the checkered flag. Horton led Dixon, Matthews, Weaver, Bernhardt, Pollen, Robertson, Turner, Hitt, and Cooley down to the green flag.
In preliminary action, the two 15-lap Heat Races were won by Matthews and McRee. The NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series National Tour returns to East Bay Raceway Park on Friday night for the second event of a triple-header with a 50-lap $2,500-to-win event.
